On Thursday April 11, the Chamber of Commerce Business Awards were held at the Port Theatre. We were very pleased that our Thrift Store took the category for Social Enterprise. Phil Robling and Lois Ohlhausen accepted the award on our behalf. We want to thank all the wonderful volunteers who work so hard every day at the store and, of course, our customers without whom we could not donate so much money to the hospital. Let’s do it again next year!
The Nanaimo Hospital Auxiliary’s large new thrift store is now officially open for business. Located in Northridge Plaza at 5800 Turner Road in North Nanaimo, the new store is adjacent to Quality Foods, just across the parking lot from the smaller location occupied by the busy store for the last 13 years. Store sales have been essential to the Auxiliary’s success, allowing the long-standing community organization to dedicate more than $2 million in the last five years for patient care and comfort at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
The store has grown year over year, but that growth now means we need a larger store to accommodate the generous donations from the Nanaimo community.
The patients and staff, at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital are now able to have access to a public WiFi system and can use use their tablets, smartphones and laptops more effectively. In March 2018 a project was started to determine the feasibility of providing WiFi access throughout the hospital. Once it was determined that the basic infrastructure was in place and could support a public WiFi network, the project moved along quickly and by June, the switch was turned on and WiFi was made available throughout the hospital.
The Auxiliary paid for the installation, and will continue to fund the annual maintenance and upkeep of the public WiFi network. This was truly a project to address our mandate of “providing patient care and comfort”.
In July, an appreciation event was held at the hospital to recognize the contributions from the Auxiliary and others. View the video produced by the hospital by clicking here.
At the 2017 Christmas Appreciation luncheon, the Auxiliary was presented with the Island Health Celebration of Excellence Award for our dedicated efforts in support of funding patient care and comfort items, as well as significantly contributing to much needed hospital equipment. The Celebration of Excellence Award is an island wide initiative, and the Auxiliary was nominated for this prestigious award in the Community Service/ Volunteerism category.

This new cookbook also includes some recipes from our original cookbook published in 1952! One of those recipes is the first publication of the dessert bar that was to be named the famous “Nanaimo Bar”

The Baby Bed Program is an initiative that Island Health has recently engaged in to help new mothers and specifically to reduce infant mortality rates. The Auxiliary has provided $20,000 funding to assist in getting this worthwhile program started in the Nanaimo area.
The program which started in Finland in the 1930’s has contributed to one of the world’s lowest infant mortality rates. Now the program is spreading across Canada and Island Health is one of the early adopters.
The annual fall Craft and Bake Sale took place on November 25th and 26th. Once again Auxiliary members worked hard to deliver a memorable sale. It is certainly an event that many hospital patients, visitors and employees look forward to.
This year the Bake Sale earned $935 and the Craft Sale earned $4,605. Every dollar brought in will find it’s way back to the hospital as donations.
It is especially wonderful to see all the hard work provided by the ladies in the craft group, and the efforts put in to creating all the delicious baking, which is always a favorite that disappears off the tables quickly.
